Check for bent or fractured rupture disk on tracer probe. Remove eight (8) screws holding rupture disk. Pry rupture disk out (there is a small notch for this purpose.) Remove screw which holds rupture disk to lower arm assembly. Lay disk on flat surface and inspect for defects. Replace if bent or fractured.

Check for "noisy" or defective tach. Connect scope to tach input on drive. Run motor in pencil trace or velocity setup routine. Vel Setup routine: CAT I: From the MAIN MENU, go to the SYSTEM SETUP/COMPUTER RESET menu. Touch 52468 to enter access code. From the MAIN MENU go to the SYSTEM SETUP/SYSTEM SETUP X menu. Touch the VEL SETUP touch field and enter (1) for X, (2) for Y and (4) for Z (any combinations of axis can be made to move. For example, if you enter the sum of their axis numbers e.g. 7 = 1 + 2 + 4 = X + Y + Z all 3 axes with move.)

CAT II: From the MAIN MENU, go to the SYSTEM SETUP screen and touch OEM, then 123. Answer NO to question "Do you want to change code". From the SYSTEM SETUP screen, go to the COMMON PARAMETER screen, touch VELOCITY LOOP DIAGNOSTIC ACTUATORS for axis being checked.

CAUTION: This step will cause the machine to move in the axis selected in a back and forth motion. It will move at up to the trace feed rate (depending on the override potentiometers settings) for a couple of inches and then reverse.

If signal is not clean (high frequency noise indicated using an oscilloscope) tachometer must be replaced. If motor motion is not smooth but tachometer is clean see HIGH AXIS MOTOR CURRENT procedure. CAT I: From the MAIN MENU, go to the SYSTEM SETUP/COMPUTER RESET menu and touch CLEAR CODE. CAT II: From the MAIN MENU, go to the SYSTEM SETUP menu and touch the OEM button to clear the access code. Check condition of stylus and model.

Stylus should be a low friction material (polished steel for small diameter, nylon for large. Uncoated aluminum will have a tendency to stick to models especially metal models.) Check for flat spots or ridges on stylus. Check to ensure stylus is mounted a minimum of 1.5" into tracer probe collet. Try tracing with a lighter stylus (Holes may be drilled, stylus hollowed or lighter material). Check model surface for roughness or high drag from coating on model (i.e. varnish or dirt). Polish model surface or put on layer of fine powder (i.e. talcum or graphite).
